We commemorate Labor Day every May 1. In fact, based on a Joint Decree (SKB) of the Minister of Religion, Minister of Manpower, and Minister of Administrative Reform and Bureaucratic Reform, International Labor Day which falls on Thursday is designated as a national holiday in Indonesia.
Labor Day is also commonly known as May Day. The history of this commemoration began in the United States (US) in the late 19th century.
At that time, groups of workers in the US fought for their rights in the workplace, for example about shorter working hours; better pay; and safer working situations.
Then on May 1, 1886 there was a demonstration by thousands of workers in Chicago, USA demanding their rights. Unfortunately, the action led to violence and the death of a number of people. Four labor activists were imprisoned and sentenced to death on charges of terrorism.
The incident then triggered the international labor movement to commemorate the struggle of workers and fight for their rights in the workplace.
In 1889, the International Labor Congress was held in Paris, France. In this event, May 1 was decided as International Labor Day or May Day.
