Oceans cover more than 70% of the planet. Water is our source of life, supporting the survival of humanity and all other organisms on earth.
The ocean produces at least 50% of the earth's oxygen, is home to most of the earth's biodiversity and is the main source of protein for more than a billion people worldwide. Additionally, the ocean is key to our economy, with an estimated 40 million people to be employed by marine-based industries by 2030.
With 90% of large fish populations reduced and 50% of coral reefs destroyed, we need to work together to create a new balance with the ocean that no longer drains its riches, but restores its vibrancy and gives it new life.
World Oceans Day or World Oceans Day is celebrated every June 8. The aim is to increase public awareness of the importance of protecting marine ecosystems.
This international warning reminds us all of the great role the sea plays in everyday life. They are the lungs of the Earth, the main source of food and medicine and an important part of the biosphere.
The 2024 World Ocean Day commemoration carries the theme 'Awaken New Depths'. The UN is working with various parties to show how important our relationship with the sea is.
